First, the sender is almost always lying to you if its a stock gauge. A 351-C
in good condition will idle at around 20 psi hot, and go to 50-60 psi around
3000 rpms. It will go to over 70 when first started- with a mechanical gauge.
With a stock gauge & sender, you can get about any number between 0-70 but
rarely anywhere near the mechanical gauge's reading. Many of us run both types of
gauge and use the stock one as an idiot light. My mechanical gauge is on a
tee fitting in back with the electric gauge sender on the tee-s side branch.
They are nowhere close in readings.
If its NOT a stock gauge, you have either a low oil level or worn crank
bearings, or you're running a stock oil pan and cornering when the gauge reading
drops. This commonly happens with Panteras and is the reason most reputable
engine builders will not sell you an engine for a Pantera without a fully baffled
oil pan included. Aviaid or Armando sells such a pan. A few such pressure
drops and you have NO crank bearings left. This baffled-pan requirement includes
Chevy and big-block engines. FWIW- J DeRyke
