Doug,
 
While you have the tranny out, you could remove the bolts on the  interior of 
the bellhousing which hold the bellhousing to the tranny. As Goran  points 
out, these bolts serve no structural purpose in the Pantera installation.  Goran 
has been running a 7L Hemi for years in this configuration with no  problems.
 
With these bolts removed, the tranny can be pulled by removing  the exterior 
tranny nuts while the bellhousing is left attached to the engine.  This means 
the starter can stay in place, the sheetmetal bottom cover can remain  in 
place, and the bellhousing can remain in place. It also means you have  lighter 
load to be lifted.
 
If you need to work on the clutch, you can  then handle the bellhousing 
removal as a sperate issue.
