The tires sizes are confusing.  There are several ways of expressing tire
sizes that have changed over time.  Some use metric units, some English, and
some use a mixture.  

The one we commonly use has a mixture.  It has tread width in millimeters, a
unit-less aspect ration, and a inner diameter (wheel diameter) in inches.
"305/50-15" has tread that is 305 mm wide.  With 25.4 mm per inch, that
works out to 12".  The aspect ration is 50 (or .50 to be more accurate), so
the sidewall height is 6" (12" x .5).  With an inner diameter of 15" plus a
top and bottom sidewall, the total height of the tire is 27" (6+15+6).  As
with clothing, various brands of tires can run a little large or a little
small verses the reported sizes.

The Hoosier tires that you are looking at express their sizes as tire height
in inches, tread width in inches, aspect ratio, and inner diameter in
inches.  "27x10.50R-15" is 27" high and 10" wide for a 15" wheel.  It is the
same height as the 305/50-15 but is 2" narrower.  You want to have a tread
width a little wider than the wheel, so the Hoosier recommends that tire for
7-9" wide wheels.  You could probably get away with it on your 10" wide
wheels, though.  They don't have anything with will work for the fronts, at
least in that particular tire.

Hi all - I've been bugging Mark McW and Garth with a lot of dumb questions -
so I figured I might as well bug all of you - stumbled on to this tire - H
rated (130mph) - ok for me as my use will be street - but having a tough
time translating sizes into current cm sizing - there seem to be a lot of
tires on the chart below that are suggested for 8" and 10" rims widths and
that are 15" diameter - but if for example I were looking for 225/50/15 and
305/50/15, do any of these tires match - and if so, how are you figuring
