[DeTomaso] NPC Anyone Got a Mini Cooper?

Before we bought the Insight, we considered:

Mini Cooper S: We rented one, and liked it, but not enough to buy it. I
have one friend that has one, and he is a diehard fan.

Corvette: Used C5's are probably in the low 20's. The one I test drove was
louder than the Pantera. Then I got bigger pipes. Can't be outdone. At
any rate, they're a great car for the price, and they are reported to get
mpg in the 30's on the highway.

Toyota MR2: Sporty. Decent price. Mpg's in the 30's. We didn't test
drive one. If I remember correctly, we decided against this since we could
get a C5 for less $$. We were only looking at new MR2's.

Prius: We looked at this one too. You could probably call it a fun car,
but not because it is sporty. Friends are reporting 42-45mpg. Not bad for
a car that is essentially a mini-minivan.

Smart Car: I saw one of these yesterday. It would make a fun commuter. I
wouldn't drive it around 18-wheelers. That car is tiny.

By the way, I just finished an 1,100 mile trip in the Insight. I averaged
77 mpg. One tank lasted 750 miles. I was going to go for 800 miles from a
tank (10.5 gal), but I didn't want to press my luck.

Art,

I can't offer comments on the Mini Cooper other than I've drive a friend's
car once and was
overwhelmingly unimpressed with the performance (or lack of). Go-kart like
reflexes,
cornered very flat, and had way more interior room than I would expect,
but generally boring
  to drive.

What's your budget? If you want a fun economical car for your daily
commute but don't
want to spend a lot of money, get a 92-98 BMW 3 series. I bought a 96 BMW
328i sedan
with a 5-speed last year for $5,000 and love it! I have been thoroughly
impressed with the
car! Performance is great - accelleration, handling, braking. The car
looks great, the interior
is like new, I have room for the entire family, it's fun to drive, and I
get great gas mileage
(22.8 mpg avg city and 33 mpg avg hwy). Now I just need to resist the urge
to trick out the
BMW with new springs, brakes, etc. Keep those dollars dedicated to the
Pantera!

Anyway, if you want to spend a little more money, get a 99-03 BMW 3
series. Same great
handling and performance of my model, but better. And better looking too.
Decent cars are
readily available in the $10-$20,000 price range.

  Cheers!
  Garth
