I found an even easier method. 

I looked on the coil to see which post was labeled + and which was labeled
-.

Sometimes I type faster than I think.

Using a voltmeter across the two smaller terminals the terminal with the
lower voltage should be the negative. If they are both the same and close to
12 V, bump the engine over and retry until you see a difference.
