I find it funny that the word "reasonable" appears in the story below. It seems so out of place.

<< With all due respect (you know I love you, man), I find it hard to believe
that an American boy in the latter part of the twentieth century could make
it through high school and into (and maybe through) college without knowing
how to drive an automobile.
>>>It was a battle of wills between me and my parents. I wanted to ride
motorcycles. They refused to allow it, insisting that as long as I lived under
their roof, I would only be allowed to drive a car (and would have to pay the
$1200 insurance out of my own pocket).
So I told them to stuff it.
They figured that I would cave in eventually once I discovered girls. They
failed to reckon on the fact that I would discover girls who had their own cars
(and happily, cars with bigger back seats than anything I would ever consider
driving). :>)
Eventually they caved in and allowed me to get a motorcycle (at age 20).
>And what state issues a motorcycle license to
someone without a driver's license? Come ON! We're all dying to know the
true details behind your deprived (depraved?!!!) childhood. >>
>>>As a matter of principle, I insisted upon getting a motorcycle-ONLY
license, which raised a few eyebrows at the DMV--they had never issued one before.
It took some head-scratching and let-me-talk-to-my-supervisoring before they
figured out that in fact there was a mechanism that would allow that. So I got
a standard-looking driver's license, except that it was a Class "M" only, as
opposed to a Class C and Class M.
As a practical matter, not having an auto license prevented my parent's car
insurance from being raised, too.
I rode motorcycles exclusively, day or night, rain or shine, all year 'round,
but eventually I had to make a concession to practicality. After I graduated
from college, I was moving away to go to pilot training, and who knows where
after that, and so I'd need a car.
So I did what any reasonable person would do--a few weeks before moving to
Oklahoma, I bought a Pantera. :>)
