If you mean the kind of sheet metal valley pans used in NASCAR:

  I don't think conventional heads (2V, 4V, etc) have surfaces (like Yates heads have) for a sheet metal valley cover.  If you mean a metal intake gasket which also covers the valley:

  I don't think it's required, but some people like it because it keeps hot oil off the bottom of the intake manifold.
