I've always used a very thin coat on one surface and then only to hold the gasket in place, let it almost dry completely and then install it ( the pan ) loosely, snugging up each bolt in a random pattern ( like lug nuts ) and lastly making the final tightening once they are all in place and you've made sure that it isn't pinched or bunched up or anything else that would be bad.

Before RTV was so widespread, I've seen old guys use string to try the gasket in place through the holes and they swear by it. You'll need more RTV on the front and back I'm sure,
  Which gasket are you using?

Should I use gasket sealer\maker in the corners? If so, what kind works best? The engine is out of the car and in a stand.

thanks in advance for your help.
