[DeTomaso] Horror Stories....Re: Trailering Tiedown Points

If I recall correctly, the conversation came about when we were discussing how I was towing the vehicle in my enclosed trailer. The straps had loosened up a little bit and I told him it I was not worried because it was in gear. In that situation the front end and rear end were not in jeopardy just the ZF but in that conversation he told me to park it (on the street or in the trailer)with the parking brake on but not in gear because of inherent weakness in the design. I was also confused how it could withstand a pounding on the track but not a bump in the parking lot....but he is much more knowledgeable than I so I did not doubt his statement.

It doesn't take much to experience major $ damage to Pantera sheet metal either : (

I'm not arguing that someone bumping your car can't break a tooth off a gear, I'm just proposing that the impact which breaks a gear may cause expensive damage to the sheet metal also. I suppose it all depends on how they hit you and how the tires hold the road surface. I would have guessed (maybe incorrectly) that even a small impact from any angle will bend the body before the gears break.

not according to Wilkenson, he said it didn't take much to break the zf.

That would depend on if the nose or rear was hit. I suspect that the damage to the body would be a greater consequence than the damage to the ZF.

Huh? It can take 700 HP out of a blown Cleveland but not a bump? I
wonder what that is all about?

That is what I always did until Wilkenson told me not to leave it in
gear because if it got bumped while in gear, it would break the cluster.
He said don't leave it in gear parked, don't tow it in gear.....the part
