Chuck,

Cola contains very weak phosphoric acid. It will slowly clean off any slight rust and organic gunk in the mechanism - it likely won't touch grease. It won't touch most hard plastics.

Use sugar free because the sugar in the real stuff will gum the mechanism up again.

I used to use it for cleaning up tarnished electrical connections when they go greeny blue. Now that I work in the water industry I have access to 20% orthophosphoric acid, so my overnight is now 5 mins.

If you can get hold of 10-20% phosphoric acid it is a really good idea to wipe some over bare metal before respray. It provides a really good key and is a rust preventative - This is usually done on new cars unless they are galved. The same stuff is in propriatory rust eater products.

Throw an old copper penny into a glass of cheap cola for the night and see what happens.

  Cheers

  Phil

Dear Phil,

You wrote:
"Just my 2p,I'd take out the seatbelt catch and immerse it in sugar free cola for a day or two, then wash it out with wd40 - or eezit oil, or whatever you call it.
It usually works for me!"

I have led a sheltered life and I don't understand the detergent properties of sugar free cola? :-] Can you explain how and why that is a good cleaning solvent? I suspect that you've used it before with good results.....

Warmest regards, Chuck Engles
