FYI...all the posts on the Volvo 240 brake calipers led me to find a page that
shows an upgrade from the 240 caliper directly to the VR70R caliper which is a
Brembo caliper (requiring an adapter which can be purchased) with 13"
rotors....NEW Brembo calipers $200+/-(without core add $40), rotors $105, pads
for $60...plus the pads will be around for quite some time because they fit a
Volvo VR70R.

Scroll down the page and there are some very good pictures and descriptions of
this brake swap. The project actually looks quite doable and simple.

  Thanks for the note Chuck!

I'll do some research (how big a wing to add on the house, etc).

Wichita and "reasonably close", eh? ROADTRIP!

There are so many lifts out there it is mind boggling

When we go to barrett Jacksons there is a sea of lifts. All heavily
discounted. Particularly the displays as they do not want to bring them
  back home.

I wish someone would do a lift shootout, like we see on cars and other
  things.

Maybe a consumer report shootout on lifts.

So many lifts so little time

  Rgds,

  Ralph

  Bend-Pak HD-9
You cannot buy directly from the manufacturer. I forget where I bought
it from (somewhere on the internet). There was a wide range of prices
for the same thing from different places.

Doing a google search for: 4 post lift ... I found:
  http://www.asedeals.com/garage_lift.html<http://www.asedeals.com/garage_lift.html<http://www.asedeals.com/garage_lift.html%3Chttp://www.asedeals.com/garage_lift.html>>

3 years ago I paid $2200. This included taxes, shipping, drip plates and
  sliding jack plate.

  Hi David,

About 5 years I did all of my lift research. The best out there is Mohawk
  http://www.mohawklifts.com<http://www.mohawklifts.com/<http://www.mohawklifts.com%3chttp//www.mohawklifts.com/>> I bought there Sys 1
(10,000 pound) two post
  lift http://www.mohawklifts.com/consumer/system1.php<http://www.mohawklifts.com/consumer/system1.php<http://www.mohawklifts.com/consumer/system1.php%3Chttp://www.mohawklifts.com/consumer/system1.php>>
This thing is made
from real thick steel. The base plate was like 7/8" thick. My lift has a
hydraulic cylinder on each side, no chains or cables involved. When I told
them I wanted to install the lines under ground they made all the lines and
fittings up to my drawings for $100.

They also sell 4 post models, but I wanted a two post like SOBill.

  Larry (mohawk) - Cleveland

  Dear Dan,

Thanks for the tip. I just called them. It appears that they will be able to
provide parts and service, if needed on the now-orphan (like Panteras)
AutoLifters units.

Hi everyone especially Dan Jones, I am looking to purchase a stroker kit
from Flatlander racing, but the only forged kit for the cleveland that they
offer is internally balanced. They seem to be the only shop that offers a
standard size piston for the stroker kit, without a custom order. Can I use
it and
what do I need to do to use an internal balanced system.

You would need a damper and flywheel which are (zero?) balanced for an
internally balanced crank. I would suspect that most the dampers for internally
balanced motors are race parts, and the weight seems to vary a lot. I'm not
sure what the tradeoffs are for light weight dampers versus heavier ones, but it
might be worth looking into before you spend $300+ on one. I think John Bentley
has commented on most of this, and probably would be a good source of info.

Because most of these dampers are race parts, you'd need to make sure
you get one with the 4 bolt Cleveland pattern, because most have a 3 bolt
pattern. One like this might be good:

Randy Gillis (SP?) who is/was a custom piston guy at J&E is also
knowledgeable regarding Cleveland strokers. He might be a good person for you
top call about pistons and about Cleveland strokers. Just be prepared to
receive a dozen conflicting opinions from as many experts. It can shake your
faith in objective truth, LOL.

Are you sure it's not the other way around? Most of the kits are
designed for external balance and you pay more for internal balance
because they must insert slungs of expensive mallory metal into the
  crank throws.

That's surprising, as well. Have you tried:

You need a flywheel and balancer with zero balance.

  Stephen,

This plastic gear is the part that the teeth normally strip on; I suggest a
cyber trip to ebay UK and you can pick up a used wiper motor from a Jaguar,
Triumph or Austiin Mini for a couple quid (GBP Sterling). I got a NOS wiper
motor this way for 17GBP or ~US$35.

  Julian

[don't know if this embedded graphic comes through - does anyone have part
  # 7 which is the gear that they are willing to part with? thanks, stephen]

Triumph or Austiin Mini for a couple quid (GBP Sterling). I got a NOS wiper
motor this way for 17GBP or ~US$35.

  Mark,
If the door height is close to clearing the door I just
added a layer of 1 1/8" plywood on the trailer where
the tires track only. It clears but be careful if it
is close and big guys like you and me can flex
the suspension down when moving around trying
to work your way out of the beast.... I touched the
fender of the door once doing this

I grew up on Minis - when the gear got worn, we'd just take it off and spin it
180 degrees. The mechanism only uses half of the wheel so the other side of the
wheel has no wear - or at least it does on a mini.

Mike - many thanks as always - I do not have the original headers, but I do
appear to have stock GTS headers (4 to 2 to 1), mufflers, and chrome-tipped,
angled-up tailpipes - take from your note that other than used (or NOS), muffler
alone is not available - thanks for that, perhaps I'll look to weld/refab it -
any welders refabbers out there in the SCPOCA world? - thanks, Stephen

"no". Besides, the actual tailpipe is only a small percentage of the overall

Your car is a Euro GTS. Do you have proper GTS exhausts on your car? You
should have 4-into-2-into-1 headers, and larger-diameter tailpipes.

Larger than what? Well, than the standard exhausts, which were small and
  girly.

  Let me go measure mine....

Dial caliper says just a shade over 2 1/4 inches. That's what you should
  have, no?

Hi All - I wanted to address Chuck's last paranthetical - "if they'll fit in
your garage" - I recently bought a 4 post lift for my 2 car residential garage -
prior to that, I spent months researching garage door manufacturers and
installers trying to figure out how to make it fit - I have 10.5' ceilings and
so am very lucky there - even so, no one could give me a solution to maximize
that space - one problem was that folks wanted to stay with my traditional
opener, which needs to hook on to the middle door - so to high lift it, they
needed to add either a standard 18" or 21" door panel, which left a lot of
inches on the table - the solution...a new "jack shaft" opener for residential
use from Liftmaster, released to the market last November. This opener mounts
on the side of the door, right at the torsion bar - so no center rail (which
connected the traditional opener to the door), no additional door panels, and
the door is now 6 inches off of the ceiling - as an
additional plus, because this solution does not require additional door
panels (a cost savings in of itself and allows added flexibility), the entire
door does not go over on the horizontal as far...meaning it goes up 33 or so
inches up vertically before before curving to the horizontal...as a result, when
the door clears the jamb and stops raising, it has gone 33 or so inches LESS
along the horizontal track, so this allows more vertical, useable sq. footage,
as less of it is bisected by the door - hope this makes sense, anyone please
feel free to email me for more info on the opener or the installer for the
SCPOCA gang - thanks, stephen

  Dear David,

When (circa 2000) I was in the market for a lift and checked
around and learned that, for whatever reasons, there were three or more lift
  manufacturers in Wichita, Kansas.
I took a day off and went up and toured the three facilities
and inspected things. AutoLifters was most impressive. They gave me a
good price on a package plus extras and then did not charge me shipping down
  the interstate to Oklahoma City.
In the last seven years, there have been a few things happen and
they have been very responsive and easy to deal with.
Wichita is reasonably close to Durango. You might make a road
trip out of the Journey to Lift Land.......!

Lifts are very good (if they'll fit in your garage),

Indeed, I ended up getting a Bend-Pak (HD9 wide) - it is priced pretty
agressively lift alone (2.4K delievered, no tax from AES) - that was for the
lift, without the drip trays, casters or jack trays - true, if you include
those, the bp product become almost 1K more expensive - so, true, apples to
apples, it is not there, but apples to oranges (which is how I convince myself
when I really want something), I said a bp lift today for a few hundred more,
i'll get the accessories later ... thanks, sl

I guess their product was too good & their margins were too low. This is
what you get when you search for them.

I saw the post on Bendpak. Bendpak makes great product. I have some of
  their tire equipment.

  Dear Customers,

I am deeply saddened at the loss of yet another competitor . As of today
  Tuesday May 3rd 2005 the website www.autolifters.com<http://www.autolifters.com/<http://www.autolifters.com%3chttp//www.autolifters.com/>>
and the phone number
800-759-0703 local 316-630-0011 are no longer functioning. It has been a
rumor that the company could not sustain the competative pricing brought
about by all the Chinese imports and aparently the Chinese dominance has
taken it's toll on yet another American manufacturer. We suggest that if
you have placed orders with the company and have not received your product
that you do whatever you feel is in your best interests. If for some
reason between the time this e-mail goes out and you receive it, their web
site and phone numbers are turned back on please disregard this alert.

I looked at the SCAT website, and they say that all the 351 cranks which use
up to a 6 inch rod are 28 oz externally balanced, and all the cranks made to use
greater than 6 inch rods are internally balanced. Can someone explain why?

Looked at the Eagle site, looks like all the forged 2.75 main cranks are
internally balanced. They do have a cast 3.85 stroke 2.75 main crank with a 28
oz balance. They have one of these listes with their Specials for $233 with
"cosmetic blemish". might be a good deal?

All I can guess is that they think anyone buying a 2.75 main crank is
building a race motor and wants an internally balanced crank???

One question for Dan, I know that Jack (maybe others) have said that the
block is the weak link with a Cleveland. I'm wondering if a good cast crank
will break before the main webbing etc. in a Cleveland block fails?

Are you sure it's not the other way around? Most of the kits are
designed for external balance and you pay more for internal balance
because they must insert slungs of expensive mallory metal into the
  crank throws.

That's surprising, as well. Have you tried:

You need a flywheel and balancer with zero balance.

  Bend-Pak HD-9
You cannot buy directly from the manufacturer. I forget where I bought
it from (somewhere on the internet). There was a wide range of prices
for the same thing from different places.

Doing a google search for: 4 post lift ... I found:
  http://www.asedeals.com/garage_lift.html<http://www.asedeals.com/garage_lift.html<http://www.asedeals.com/garage_lift.html%3Chttp://www.asedeals.com/garage_lift.html>>

3 years ago I paid $2200. This included taxes, shipping, drip plates and
  sliding jack plate.

I'm getting ready to another batch of blade type fuse boxes if anyone is
interested. If you need more details email me. Also I just installed one on an
Alfa GTV. It went in quite well it's a little more intricate of a box, but it
fit nice in the stock location.

Phil - thanks for the suggestion - we tried that - we popped the tab off the
gear, put it 180 degrees around, and then spun the gear around 180 degrees - we
still had the problem, which led us to believe that it actually spins 360
degrees - thanks, sl

I grew up on Minis - when the gear got worn, we'd just take it off and spin it
180 degrees. The mechanism only uses half of the wheel so the other side of the
wheel has no wear - or at least it does on a mini.

[don't know if this embedded graphic comes through - does anyone have part

  Subject: Re: [DeTomaso] Road Trip

I mostly carry this stuff to help other people. Even if your car is OK,
there will always be some breakdown somewhere.

Most breakdowns come from not from driving hard but from old age. Even with
the best efforts, stuff happens. Fortunately, I have always made it home
under my own power -- in large part due to having some tools. Over the last
few years, I have had the following put me on the side of the road for a few
  minutes or a few hours.

  * Cable comes loose from the battery post. Fixed without tools.
  * Cigar lighter grounds out against shift linkage blowing fuse which is
shared with radiator fans (don't ask). Fixed with electrical tape and new
  fuse.
  * Oil pressure sender dies causing mild panic as indicated pressure hits
zero while in the middle of Nowhere, AZ. Fixed with wrench and new sender.
  * Loose connection on ammeter fries adjacent wires. Fixed with a bolt to
bypass the ammeter and a lot of electrical tape.
  * MSD tach adapter falls off mount and drags on the ground. Fixed with zip
  tie.
  * Coolant temp sender suddenly reads low. Fixed with info from cell phone
with Jack DeRyke on speed dial.
  * Throttle cable comes off ball joint on carb. Fixed with safety wire.
  * Throttle cable ball joint breaks off of gas pedal. Fixed with drill and
tap and a borrowed ball joint.
  * Coolant barf when fans failed. Fixed with a few bottles of water.

Each time I have occasion to need a tool and do not have it, it gets added
to the list for the next time. Everything I take has been used at least
once by me or someone else.

Come to think of it, I have had modern cars put me on the side of the road
over night a few times. Just last year, I spent three lovely days in
Bakersfield when the ignition wires fried on my 300zx at 5:01 on a Friday
  night.

My car made it two years running without incident. I drive the piss out of
my car and it is solid and reliable.

It is funny how everyone prepares for disaster. The car (with the right
  preparation) is very reliable.

Sorry, just sitting here giggling as it always seems that it is an endless
list of "what you need to take with you incase the car god strikes you down
from the heavens because you have a pantera" schtuff that everyone wants to
take with them for a drive out of state.

Just get in there and fix yer cars! Ask the local club to help if needed.

It's a easy car to work on.

  Sheesh!

I am planning a road trip to Vegas for the Fun Run. Only this year I'm
driving my car. Other than the obvious things to bring, oil, spare belts,
jack, fuses and a Bible, any suggestions of things to bring? I have
purchased a great little trailer that is to be pulled behind a motorcycle,

  Hi guys,

I am looking for photos of a two-pod dash, the later style of two-pod dash
that uses a pair of very thin strips of metal to hold the vinyl material down.

One longer one runs between the defroster vents, while the other one is just
a couple of inches long and angles down towards the knick-knack tray above the

  glovebox.

Close-up photos of those two suckers would be most appreciated! Please send
  them directly to me.

  THANKS!!!

  Mike

This product gets a "Strong Positive" from me. (For what it is worth -
  grin.)

I'm getting ready to another batch of blade type fuse boxes if anyone is
interested. If you need more details email me. Also I just installed one on
an Alfa GTV. It went in quite well it's a little more intricate of a box,
but it fit nice in the stock location.

One question for Dan, I know that Jack (maybe others) have said that the
block is the weak link with a Cleveland. I'm wondering if a good cast crank
will break before the main webbing etc. in a Cleveland block fails?
  >

I have a Scat cast crank on my 393 with a dyno'ed 560 fwhp. Scat told me
their cast crank is good for 650hp.

A strong positive review? or a strong positive charge through the
  passenger's right shin? ;-)

How much $ are these fuse boxes? How many fuse positions do they have?

   Joel and all,

Good question, since it seems the search function is now missing on the
realbig site??

Go to PCNC site - www.panteraclubnorcal.com<http://www.panteraclubnorcal.com/<http://www.panteraclubnorcal.com%3chttp//www.panteraclubnorcal.com/>>

Click on 'search' in top toolbar and you'll find search entries for several
sites, including forum.

You can use google to do your searches!

  go to www.google.com<http://www.google.com/<http://www.google.com%3chttp//www.google.com/>>

  in the search box type:

  "words to search for" site:http://www.realbig.com/pipermail/detomaso/<http://www.realbig.com/pipermail/detomaso/>

As an example (that no one should try at home!), if you wanted to search
  for "Dawg", you would type:

  dawg site:http://www.realbig.com/pipermail/detomaso/<http://www.realbig.com/pipermail/detomaso/>

  Hope this helps

It pulls hard. If I had the money, time and knowledge, I'd go turbos for some
real kick in the pants driving.
If I was to go with another naturally aspirated motor, I'd buy a motor from
MME and bypass all the headaches I had.

  Will,

Sounds like you have a very healthy engine. I think I've turned my car
into an engineering project and gone off the deep end. 560 WFHP must be a real
blast to drive. I just get to fondle my parts, LOL.

My garage has only a 9 foot ceiling. I can stack my two Panteras easily
with room to spare using my Direct Lift Pro Park 7. I am also using the
center pull screw garage door opener without any problems. My garage door
tracks were initially mounted very low 1.5 feet off of the ceiling. I
moved them up to within 6' of the ceiling to give me added height. All
  works well.

Here's one more DOT approved race tire you won't find on Tire Rack

And if you looking at buying some 'new' performance high speed 17/18 tires
before open track or ORR season starts (JB & Jason!) take a look at Nitto Tires
www.nittotire.com<http://www.nittotire.com/<http://www.nittotire.com%3chttp//www.nittotire.com/>> 'new' just recently offered DOT
legal race tire (model # NT01). It has a Z speed rating and several F & R sized
options to chose from.

I don't want to hear any slackers in April or May whine about not being able
to find race tires.

Ditto what he said? I did this job last summer while the
engine was out and now I?ll have a much easier time installing the new
pan. An air chisel makes short work of the original metal.
            Tom

I would recommend removing your cross member and e-brake bracket and
installing the removable units from Pantera Performance. You may think
you will never have to pull your pan off the motor while it's in the,
then for some reason need to and have to pull the motor to do it. As
much as you would have to disconnect to lift the motor enough to get the
pan off without a removable cross member, you might as well pull it out
  altogether.
The two pieces from Dennis Q are first quality, and will set you back

Subject: Re: Armando Oil Pan Group Buy - Delivery Update
Any installation tips or suggestions from those who are installing or
have installed the new pan would be greatly appreciated. I really don't
want to saw off the chassis support if I can help it...and don't want to
pull the motor either. I assume I can loosen the motor and jack it up
enough to slip out the old and slip in the new?

  Best regards,

I asked about this on a UK Volvo forum. To date, this is the only reply I got.
I have asked for the article that he mentions.

    Quote:

There aren't many people here with 240s, hence the lack of replies.
Incidentaly, it doesn't just have to a 244s...and I suspect you don't want a
later model with ABS, as the calipers are probably different)

Most 240s have 4-pot fixed Girling calipers, and a 240 can still outbrake most
modern cars, despite weighing...er...well surprisingly only about 100kg more
than a new Golf, actually! Mine is an automatic, so I get almost no engine
braking, but it still stops in one hell of a hurry when suitably provoked, and
you're always concious that there's a great deal of stopping power beneath the
wide pedal!

If that's not enough for you, there are suppliers in the US who can get you
adaptor brackets to allow the fitment of the huge 4-pot Brembo 'R' calipers
(from the S60R/V70R models). I'm led to believe that these are very similar to
the brakes fitted to most Mitsubishi Evos. The discs are a drop-in, I believe.

If you'd like to know more, I'm sure I can dig out an article on the swap.

  cheers

  James

The triangular piece is the gusset between the front crossmember and the
member that the lower a-arms bolt to. The bar going left to right is the
rollbar. All is seen from straight underneath the car.
