[DeTomaso] Which 351 in each year? and now California Carb &Distributor Question

Hi Phil
As far as I can tell, the same distributor and carb were used in 1971 for
Cal and 49 state. Carb was D1ZF-FA. Distributor was D0OF-12127-V

In 1972, the distributors were different for California, but the carbs both
seem to be D2ZF-AA. I'll send you a scan from a Ford spec sheet that shows
them all but the list will strip the attachment so it won't show here. Use
the Mustang/Cougar charts. The part number for 72 Cal distributor is
D2ZF-12127-FA. The 49 state is D2ZF-12127-EA.

I have never spent the time to research the 73 and 74 model changes because
I have a 72 pre-L myself, but I suspect that they may also have differences
between Cal and 49 state distributors and possibly carbs too.

It seemed like the Auto makers were running for their lives in these years
to try to meet newly imposed emission controls, so actual specs were
changing quite frequently and often released very late, so others may have
more to add to what I've found. I just don't think anyone else is very
interested in original Pantera carbs and distributors.

Barry

&Distributor Question

Hi all,

Been off the forum for a long time, but have been a consistent lurker.

Anyway - my question is what is the difference in the carbs and distributors
for California bound cars versus cars bound for other US destinations as
Barry refers to in his previous post?

"Actually...if anyone cares, while the Ford program was running, the US
bound cars appear to have used 351C engines straight off the engine supply
for Mustang and Cougar 4 speed 4V production, exclusively. DeTomaso must
have been doing what he was told while Ford owned the place. The Ford Parts
books and carb/dist #s confirm this, if you spend a lot of time buying
obscure Ford literature and poring over it. That would have been the only
reasonable way to meet DOT and EPA on the US sold Panteras, with the Calif
bound cars getting Cal certified Mustang/Cougar engines with corresponding
carbs/dists."
