[DeTomaso] Re 17 tire scarce?

I am running a 305 (12.0 inch) on a "10 inch" Campy which one inch on either
side minus whatever the flange is. It has as much overhang as I would like
to have. On the other hand, I have seen the 305 on an 8 inch Campy on the
track. It looked odd, but the world did not come to an end.

Careful with your measurements, Mark. An "11 inch" rim is actually closer to
12" wide. Rim measurements are denoted as the bead width, inside to inside
of the rim flange. Typically, rim flanges are 3/8 to 1/2 in. thick, yielding
an actual rim width 3/4 to 1 in. more than the nominal (stated) rim width.
So the overhangs you quote are a bit on the large side (the overhang of a
335 tire on an 11" rim, assuming a flange thickness of 1/2", is .6"). Also
of major consideration is the overall diameter of the wheel/tire (directly
related to the section width and aspect ratio), which will adversely affect
your speedometer reading if it differs greatly from stock tire diameters.

Disclosure: Running 335/35 17 on 11" rims in the rear.
