Try loosening the mounting bolts for the upper and lower A arms to relieve
any possible binding there, then unbolt the sway bar to allow a little more
swing.
When I removed my stock front coil-overs, I recall that once I had as much
extension in the suspension as I could get, I removed the nut and tapped out
the bolt at the top of the shock, which allowed it to extend up into the
pocket a little more, I was able to remove the lower bolt and with a pry bar
pull the bottom of the coil-over out of the pocket in the lower A arm.
Depending on how tightly bolted the lower had been, this can be a process
due to the combined clamping forces from the A arm and the lower ball joint.
Good luck

If I wish to remove the front shocks, do I need a spring compressor to do
it? Or will I have enough room if the suspension simply hangs?
Currently, with the front end in the air and the wheels removed, I can't get
any movement. There is enough tension on the components that I can't budge
anything. I know, I should probably keep the wheel on and the weight of the
car on the wheel, but then I can't really see anything. Maybe I'll go out
and buy a set of ramps to put under it.
Anyway. I don't believe the bushings or ball-joints have ever been
replaced. I don't remember seeing anything like that in the receipts, and
everything looks really old. What I can see of the rubber bushings are very
cracked which of course leads me to believe I should replace them regardless
if they are really bad. <sigh> I really didn't want to get this deep until
next year. But darn it, I wanted to drive it this summer and I'm already
several weeks behind due to the steering column.
. . . And I've only got two weeks off from school.
