[DeTomaso] NPC: Cruise Control in the Rain issue Fact

Over here it does rain. Here is the problem as we experienced it. We were
driving through North Carolina one night to my Mothers to pick up our
Daughter. It had rained hard earlier but seemed fine. The cruise control was
on as we were zipping down the dark road. Suddenly we ran into a pool of
standing water. Old school driving (Pre inti-lock brakes) would have you let
off the brakes and ride it out as the car slows. However, the cruise was on
and hitting the water slowed the car down and the cruise poured on the gas
to get the speed back up. By not hitting the brakes the car revved and we
went 180 and landed in the ditch. We were stuck but OK. My wife couldn't
stop shaking for an hour. I have never used cruise control on wet roads
since.

I just had an email from my insurance agent passing along the tale about how
you should not drive with cruise control in the rain as during hydroplaning,
it will cause the car to accelerate and "take off like an airplane".

I know this string ran through the forum a while back, but I'd like to reply
to him with some current responses.  Is there any truth to this?  It seems
to me that if your tires are loosing traction during hydroplaning, how can
your car go any faster than it already is.
