Steve,
First check the location of the splined arm on the clutch rod that connects
to the slave cylinder. If it is not placed in the most advantageous position
you could be pushing against yourself.
Check the throw of the slave cylinder and reposition the arm so that it
starts at the top of the arc and finishes in about the same position on the down
side of the radius that the clutch rod is moving on.
