[DeTomaso] 2nd gear

Fred

You are mostly correct but not entirely. My personal school of hard knocks
learning experience provides an interesting insight.

The first ZF that I built to put in my car would unfortunately slip out of
third gear. Upon disassembly, the culprit was the detent spring that backs
up the rear most input shaft bearing. My inexperience reassembling the ZF
resulted in me compromising the detent spring for the 2/3 selector. It was
an obvious catch upon disassembly and after replacing the part and
reassembling the ZF, everything worked fine. Thus, the proof is in the
pudding that those detents contribute to keeping the ZF in gear.

I suppose that I could have elaborated more on the internal workings of the
ZF, however, it seemed prudent to first inspect potential external causes.
If it is internal, it is most likely a broken syncro spring as my broken
detent spring only affected 3rd.. Although, I have seen syncro springs
busted on two ZFs that I have rebuilt, and neither driver had complained
about the tranny jumping out of gear.

Oddly, I am rebuilding another ZF at this moment, for another member, and he
had no clearance left between the second gear syncros; he states the ZF
neither shifted poorly or ground while going into second gear. Go figure.
