[DeTomaso] 2nd gear

I thought the springs and balls were part of an interlock to prevent
engaging two gears at one time as well as indexing the ZF in a selected
gear. The balls and springs are too small to depend on for any effort to
retain the transmission in gear and only provide a positive stop or
index. I thought that the synchronizer is responsible for holding the ZF
in the selected gear. There are "points" or highs on the gears of the
synchronizer that act as detents to hold it in or out of gear. If the
edges of the teeth on the gear that engage with the synchronizer as well
as the mating synchronizer gear teeth are chipped or worn and rounded it
is then that the ZF is likely to pop out of gear. Maybe I have an
improper understanding.
