[DeTomaso] 2nd gear

I'm home for a day in between traveling and I noticed no one has responded 
to a question I asked, so maybe it never made it to the forum.  Here it is:

Occasionally, my car will pop out of second gear and go into neutral for no 
apparent reason.  Reverse and fifth work fine, and the shift lever isn't 
hitting the console before it gets fully into gear.

When in neutral the shift lever moves freely so I don't think it has the 
extra detent some have mentioned in other forum notes.

Any ideas?
