Do you still have points? I had a Honda that would have the tach bouncing
all over when the rubbing block on the points would wear down. Tach would go
nuts long before the car would start running bad. Adjust the points and it
would be fine for another 6,000 or 8,000 miles.

Hi, well it is not the connections. I redid them and they are perfect. But
new symptom, car starts instantly, but I noticed the ammeter was 1 division
to
charge for, 15 years it was always on zero with my Ultiama battery, but I
replaced the battery with a duralast 3 weeks ago. Now the car runs fine for
20
minutes, this I have timed and this is the time required for the next thing
to happen. At idle in my drive way tach bounces from 1,000 to 4,000 rpms
indicated, and the ammeter needle is jumping in time with the tach ! ( 1
div.
back and forth, in charge direction) I shut off the engine with the key,
and it
stops normally, now 3 minutes later I start the car and put it back in
garage. Could it be the coil ? I don't want to shotgun the fix by just
replacing
the Alt, Voltage reg., Coil and distr. This is getting personal now and I
want
to figure it out. I guess its the engineer in me. Happy 4th to all. Pat
