[DeTomaso] 86 Pantera GT5s for sale on Craigslist

Mike,
The engine offered with the car was actually the engine out of my GT5-S.
I removed it to install the twin supercharged engine I had taken out of
my '72 when I sold it. Sam Korper bought the GT5-S engine from me and
had it rebuilt by one of our local shops noted for excellent work. At
$5k, the engine was a steal. It had never been run. At one time the car
was advertised for $48k in the Washington Post but when another
Chesapeake Pantera member tried to purchase it at that price, he was
told it wasn't for sale.
As I recall, the paperwork was OK on the car because Andy DiFatta had
made sure of that when he wanted to purchase it. He had done the
research necessary and I remember that he kept his findings to himself
to thwart anyone else who might be after the car. The problem was with
the owner at the time. Every time Andy attempted to get together for
some serious negotiations some reason was offered that prevented it from
happening. Andy wisely gave up.
Shortly after the VA owner bought it the clutch went up actually
grinding the release fingers off the pressure plate. This shouldn't have
happened for the low mileage represented. Chesapeake Pantera members
helped to replace the clutch at a tech session and there were many signs
that that was not the first time the engine had been removed. As I
recall, the rear panel was beat up from prior attempts of some knuckle
dragger to move the engine rearward to facilitate its removal.
