[DeTomaso] Helmets

While most sanctioning bodies don't differentiate, I suggest not saving money
by picking a motorcycle helmet for both bike and car use. While they're
physically impact-tested pretty much the same and get a magic sticker with the same
date, one BIG difference in the two is, bike helmet liners are not fireproof
while car helmets are. In a bike crash, the rider is almost always thrown far
away from any flames while the driver in a car is strapped inside with the
fire. Wearing a flammable cap in a car fire is not real smart.
A second point is, the liners in both may be expanded polyethylene foam, or
polypropylene foam. Polypropylene foam has some memory while polyethylene does
not. So since the average skull is not round but has bumps and lumps, your own
unique head will gradually permanently compress a polyethylene liner to give
you a more comfortable fit, by slightly denting in above any skull bumps.
Whether this compromises a liner or not is unknown. Polypropylene will also
compress during use, but returns to its original (possibly uncomfortable) shape each
time you take it off. All this may not help but at least informs you, thanks
to Circle Track magazine- Good luck-J DeRyke
