Before you run off and buy helmets, seat belts, etc., be sure to read the
ORR's rule book to make sure what you get meets the requirements.
The $100 helmets are probably just motorcycle helmets which have less
stringent testing standards and do not have the fireproof lining. I doubt
those are ORR-legal. BTW, the Las Vegas track event's standards are SA2000
or better for Group A and Snell 95 or better for Groups B and C.
For the ORR and track days, the basic Bell or Simpson helmet is fine.
I went with Pyrotech (Bell) SA2000 in plain black in that it fit me well and
was half the cost of a Simpson equivalent. YMMV.
Some brands claim to vent better than others. I don't know if it really
makes much of a difference.
I like the wider openings for better visibility.
As with clothing and tires, the sizes vary from one manufacture to another.
Also the shape varies as well. It is best to go to your local speed shop to
try them on to find the one that fits the shape and size of your head the
best.

Subject: [DeTomaso] Helmets
Now I'm really confused. I've been looking at Simpson and Bell
helmets in the range between $300 and $400. I now just found some
other much lower priced.
I don't want to spend $100 for a helmet if it's not going to protect
my head. three to four hundred seems like it would but I also know
that price doesn't necessarily mean anything.
So what is the best deal for a helmet? Besides looking for SA 2005
rating, what other features, materials, etc. should I look for?
Thanks,
Asa Jay
