Mile,

Ah, you are so right. I was thinking of the emergency release.

The bike shop will have what is needed.

You can get stainless steel wire at most any hardware store as well as the
ferrules used to form the loops or handles. The ferrules are made of aluminum
and can be formed (crushed) with slip joint pliers.

That's fine for making a back-up emergency release. But the original cable is really nothing more than a bicycle cable, which is rather different in character from most of the wire typically found at hardware stores.

Is the problem simply that the ends of your existing wire have conked out? Assuming you still have the sheath, you can buy replacement cable at any GOOD bicycle store. But hardware store wire might work just as well in this application?

Now, if you literally have nothing at all, then the bicycle shop is the only way to go--they sell the sheath, crimped-on ends and wire and you can make whatever you need there.

Mike
