The 3M Plastic Repair #5895 mentioned in the Panteraplace write-up does
not have any reinforcing ability across splits or cracks. I used it in
an attempt to repair a crack in a '73 bumper only to find there was no
structural capability and the crack returned. A remedy for the problem
is to use some of the fiberglass tape used for spackling drywall seams.
Wash the tape in mineral spirits to remove the tacky substance and let
dry. Use this tape as a reinforcing across any splits or cracks and
apply the 3M #5895 over it. This adds a structural member to the repair
and prevents recracking. You can try any other Band-Aid cookbook fix but
if you want success try the drywall tape reinforcing.
