[DeTomaso] DeTomaso] Do I own a Pantera or a Gremlin...?

I had a problem where I would get metal-on-metal sound whenever I had a
passenger in the car, but I would never hear it without a passenger. It
wasn't too loud, but it was loud enough for a passenger to hear which was
embarrassing. This drove me nuts for about two years, as I could not figure
it out.

Long story short, it turned out that the weight of the passenger pushed on
the fiberglass cover which pushed on the metal cover which moved every so
slightly but just enough to make contact with the alternator bracket on the
passenger side.

I was able to confirm this by putting some chalk on the tip of the
alternator bracket. I replaced the metal cover then pulled it off. There
was no chalk mark on the cover. I replaced the metal cover again then put a
passenger in the seat. When I pulled the cover off, I found the tell-tale
chalk mark. A wrench to the tip of the bracket solved that problem.

Absolutely, and it is tight, but as far as I can tell, the fiberglass cover
doesn't contact the belt. I may drive with the cover off for a while just
to watch what happens in there.
