Is a TIG-welder usable for minor body rust repairs?

My wifes Golf is suffering from rust around the rear wheel arches and 
some other places, and I wonder if can motivate (to my self) getting a 
TIG by using it to fix up the car?

Normally a MIG welder would be the choice, but if it is usable for this, 
I might get a TIG instead. I have done similar repairs about 30 years 
ago using oxy-acetylene, and I assume the TIG is is a bit like that, 
although I assume it will run cooler, which is good for the end result.
