Actually in Europe it's common practice to have three-joint driveshafts on ordinary sedans with live axles, e.g every RWD Volvo I've worked on which ranges from the 544 to 740. The trans output flange is fixed and the front part of the driveshaft is telescopic on splines.

THe center u-joint is a double, thus cancelling its own vibrations. Only used
with driveshafts longer than 'normal' like for extended-bed pickups,
