[DeTomaso] alternator light more info

I just checked the diode behind the dash to make sure it was still  attached. 
 It is and with the car running it is too hot to even  touch!
 
Why would my alternator light be on above idle speeds. At idle it  just  
barley flickers.  This all started a couple of days ago. I  drove the car  
for about 
30 minutes and parked it.  All was  working fine.  I came out  and it took a 
little to get the car  started.  I cranked it a few times and  finally it 
started but  after that was when the alternator light stayed on.   The amp 
gauge  
needle is just left of center towards the negative side.  I  drove  it 
straight 
home and put the battery on a trickle charger.
