[DeTomaso] alternator light

Why would my alternator light be on above idle speeds. At idle it just  
barley flickers.  This all started a couple of days ago. I drove the car  for about 
30 minutes and parked it.  All was working fine.  I came out  and it took a 
little to get the car started.  I cranked it a few times and  finally it 
started but after that was when the alternator light stayed on.   The amp gauge 
needle is just left of center towards the negative side.  I  drove it straight 
home and put the battery on a trickle charger.
