GT40s use twin rubber fuel bladders which are slid into the sills (rockers),
effectively surrounding the driver with fuel. Such practices have long been
banned from race cars, but it was common practice through the early 1970s (and
many drivers were burned or killed as a result). The rubber bladders were
an attempt at making such a system safe.
Coincidentally back in 2005 I posted a scan from the factory GT40 parts book
showing the complicated fuel system layout on a GT40. Note the twin tanks,
with a vertical pickup at the rear of the right (driver's) side, and a
horizontal pickup at the rear of the left side. Twin fuel filler, twin fuel level
senders, an aircraft switch to select fuel delivery from one or the other, or
both tanks, single electric fuel pump, large filter, and then lines leading to
the Webar carbs (only one carb shown in the drawing).
