Putting the gas tank *inside* the cockpit seems about as dumb an idea as I've

What's to be gained, anyway?   The total volume of gas that you could carry 
in the cockpit would be incredibly small.   If you want to get creative with 
metalwork, you can cut away the floor of the front trunk and sink an irregularly 
shaped fuel tank in there.   It's both functional and safe.   Patrick Hals' 
Gr4 car is set up that way, and it's an elegant thing.

Having said that, realistically for a street-driven car there's nothing wrong 
with the stock tank setup.

   Mounting a fuel cell atop the transaxle puts a bunch of weight exactly 
where you don't want it--high, and well to the rear.   Another bad idea IMHO.
