Sandhills Open Road Challenge ~ 2007

 *                    Its fun.

 *                    Its hot AND humid.

 * Bring your own designer beer and food.

 * I brought home more grasshoppers than I took.

 * Hula Hoops and ice cream cones!
 Details follow:
Up and gathering the last 114 items to stuff into the car at about4:00am -
its going to be a long day.

Drive to Colorado Springs to visit the motor man and talk Clevelands,
then aim at Tom's house for the first stop.

Mr. & Mrs. Tom are great hosts and spoiled us for the coming test of
endurance in Nebraska. After several adult beverages (stupid in a
bottle) Mad Dawg and Larry arrived to supervise the festivities. Steak,
corn on the cob (an omen) and more likker was followed by a long study
of ice cream consumption by the local talent. We were treated to a
cruise in Tom's 63 Fairlane and a quick trip to Walgreen's so that Mad
Dawg could stock up on lubricants (his turn).

The next morning came quickly, like all new husbands, and we were off to
Nebraska for the application of stickers, tech inspection, autograph
signing (we are, after all, Team Pantera Racing ) and the initial
perspiring. I admit, I did succumb to the local girls, who did cover
me with kisses . . .but that's a story for a more adult audience.

Friday: The Mile! WOOT!! After getting lost (bad instructions) and
arriving late (Panteras are NOT good on gravel roads nor in the scenery)
I had a few minutes to remove the dangling body parts (not the huevos, I
would need them later) and ge ready for my turn. Standing start, 1 mile
 - How fast can you go????

Turns out I went plenty fast, considering "the smoothest, widest" road
in the county. And the cross winds. And the missing body parts (I've
become spoiled). A twin turbo Viper beat me by less than 67 mph and he
only got second place. There were some heavy hitters in attendance, not
to mention WAY tooooo many "other products" and more of those pesky
Nebraska kissing types. King of the Hill was snatched up by a little
Mitsubishki see-dan (with turbo, NOS, ice water intercooler and who know
 what else.) Heavy hitters, yep.

Saturday: After no breakfast the event started fairly smoothly. Lots
of local families walking the grid looking at cars (ever notice a
Pantera driver is about eyeball to eyeball with a 4 year old?)

The course: narrow, no shoulders, plenty of blind hills (I never did
get the hang of charging over a crest at 90mph), not the greatest
surface and very few corners where one could get in the groove.

At my declared speed (old chicken) it was a fun ride, but I need to bump
it up about 10 mph at least. Although without a chin spoiler it was
just about right. The "lunch" turn around at the north end was, to be
honest, a great waste of two hours. Not enough water and few places to
whizz made the wonderful food (OK, piece of bacon and a hot cake) all
the more enjoyable. Sandhills Open Road Challenge ~ 2007 is about
 surviving and enduring!

By the time I got up Sunday all my roomies were on the road, not even a
 kiss goodbye???

 In summary:

 * Larry K. is wonderful company and a great Team
 Pantera Racing manager.

 * Hula Hoop King - whodathunkit?

 * Bring your own copy of Fur, Fins and Fangs (the
preferred reading matter in a "hunting lodge") . . .Tom won't share!

 * My Coolshirt showed up Monday night . . . three
weeks isn't enough lead time from Apex!

 * The folks in Nebraska are wonderful, I'm proud of
Team Pantera Racing's donation to the town and the smiles we brought to
 the kids.

Now, I'm going to sit out in the backyard w/ the bears and empty a few
bottle of Mexico's best. Pass the grasshoppers!
