If you're talking about a new run of modified uprights, I think a sheet 
metal unit would be more realistic than magnesiun.  Use a few machined parts 
like for center/bearing section, ball joint
and lower pivot, and build the rest with lightweight plate.  It's really 
pretty common practice.
Very strong and light.
