[DeTomaso] dead temp gauge

This shouldnt be difficult to trace down if done methodically:
With the ignition on, take the connector off the temp sender and ground it to earth. The gauge should move to full throw. If it doesnt, get a voltmeter between the wire and an earth. It should give 12v. If it does, your sender is likely goosed. If not, check your fuses.
If all is ok you now need to get at the back of the gauge. Test for continuity between the ve on the gauge and the sender, and the +ve on the gauge to relevant fuse. If both ok, your gauge is goosed.
The gauge itself is effectively an inverted voltmeter. When the ignition is on, the gauge is energised on the +ve. The circuit is completed at the ve end by the sender. The resistance of the sender varies with temperature, and the voltmeter (temp gauge) inversely reads how much voltage is being allowed through (More temp, more resistance, less voltage, more throw of the needle.)
Hope this explains.
