The stock motors use an external resistor to regulate the speed.   It's 
mounted to the side of the case, and steps down the voltage from 12V to (X) volts, 
which in turn slows the motor down.

They are known to fail.   This *might* be your problem--in any case it's the 
first place I'd look, since it's a potential fire hazard when it's failed like 
that.

Changing the blower motor without removing the dash is possible, but it is 
one of the more miserable jobs you'll undertake.   Modern replacement motors 
step down the voltage internally, obviating the need for an external resistor.   
They are normally three-speed, with three separate power wires, and a ground 
wire.   You get to choose which two of the three speeds you want (most people 
use medium and high), hook those wires directly to the fan switch, and away you 
go....

Mike (wishes he had an aftermarket fan motor in his car since they are SO 
much more powerful than the stock ones....)
