I have a 1972, with a tall Blue Thunder that was cut to make it flat, and am 
(barely) running my stock engine screen, uncut.   The key is to use a drop 
base air cleaner.

Having said that, my screen is of the later type, with a hump that is raised 
in the front (level in the back).   Those were used from mid-72 on; I presume 
your friend's is an earlier type?   Those probably would have clearance 
issues, and unfortunately they don't interchange.

FWIW aftermarket screens are available from Pantera East and Kirk Evans, 
which have a taller hump center molded in.   Very, very nice.
