If you are looking for a super-high quality camera, then something like a
Nikon or Canon is the way to go. 

I went the cheaper route. I've got a Fuji S5600. I paid roughly $400. They
have now come out with later versions, so my model has been deeply
discounted lately.  

I'm very happy with the quality of the shots. It has 10x OPTICAL zoom (you
say you want digital zoom - I respectfully argue that you don't want digital
zoom - you can do that on your computer and you lose resolution in your base
photo. What you want is optical zoom to maintain resolution on your zoom
shots. It's also got 2x digital, but I don't use the digital zoom very often
if I can help it.)

Fuji was cheaper than the Canons and Olympus, and I'm happy with the
quality. If I happened to be a professional photographer, I might need
something better.

Just one person's experience. I'm happy. And I used the money I saved to pay
for gas to go to events to take pictures of!

Time to update, Because of the delay in my present camera, I took a lot of
pictures of the rear ends of cars, LOL.  I'd like something which:
   
  1)  about 10X digital zoom
   
  2)  minimum delay in capturing image
   
  3)  image stabilization
   
  4) 6+ M Pix
   
  I think think the DSLRs do all this, but I'm not sure I want to spend $600
on a camera if the technology is still evolving rapidly.
   
  Maybe an Olympus SP-510 UZ or a Canon S3 IS?
