David,

I can understand your feelings. But don't let it get you down. Note that
your car has taken you across the country
several times in as many years. And it did so without fault again this
year. Only when "it" needed a day off did
it let you know. It sounds like you had a nice day driving around. There
is always a lot of "Pantera" stuff to do in Vegas.

I bet if you had selected to visit the track event, and say the car
"retired" there, you might have found not only the parts, but you
might have had to elbow your way in, if you wanted to do the work yourself.

That is what usually happens with the "Gear Head Group".

Having to result in the spontaneous "Plan B" to get a rental etc... adds the
typical risk of the typical tourist.

Now get back to it, today during the car show, stop by the "Tech Talk", and
bring up your issue. After the meeting wanes,
you may not be the first to suggest it adjourns outside for an impromptu
solution session.

You are having a better day in Vegas than I am at home. They only "Pantera"
stuff I will do is maybe add another 20-30 cars
to the Registry, and then maybe go for a short drive in my car, before the
rest of life intervenes.

Chuck,
Wishing I had driven my Pantera 1,500 miles in the last week, and arrived at
an oasis of Pantera people & parts.

Day 10

4/27/2007

Today we joined a group that cruised to "The Valley of Fire State Park". It
was a brisk drive through roads where speed limits just didn't seem to
matter. The views were marvelous. For part 2, a stop in Ford Country at the
Valley Auto Mall where Mustang Sally's, a 50s style diner is right in the
dealership. It was a good lunch and the service guys really freaked out at
the Panteras. Most hadn't seen one. Stop 3 was at the Sun Belt Auto Museum
where we saw an incredible collection of mostly 20s to 50s cars, all in
working order. We went in 2 buildings, convertibles and hardtops. When we
went outside to leave the trouble began.

I started the car and it didn't sound right. The tach jumped up and down and
when I depressed the gas peddle, no power. Then it died. The fuel pressure
was low and the fuel pump didn't sound right. It gave the symptoms of fuel
starvation but I had just filled the tank. The fuel filter was the biggest
and easiest to change suspect. Fortunately, some folks stayed behind to help
and I was given a ride to the Auto Zone. Changing that didn't do the trick
so I pulled out the fuel sending unit/fuel take out tube and inspected the
screen. It was funky, in a strange kind of way. I blew it out and
reinstalled it. Unfortunately, the sending unit broke apart and the fuel
gauge now shows empty all the time. But it started right up. We made the 8
mile trip back to the Orleans and as I was backing into a parking spot, it
died again. I searched all over for Larry Stock so I could get a new sending
unit and save the night but he was nowhere to be found. When he did pull in,
I ran down to meet him but he managed to sneak past me somehow. After
walking about 3 miles around this place, I located him in the hospitality
suite and it was too late. He had found the beer. It seems that Larry had
won the overall race today, whatever that means. He said he would get me the
part tomorrow. So it seemed that the only way to complete the night as
planned would be to rent a car. I went to the Bell desk to inquire about a
rental car and they said I could get a compact car for $31 and that didn't
sound bad at all. I said lets do it and they said I couldn't get it till
8:30 and here is where it gets fun. We come back @ 8:30 and are told to go
with the rental guy where we get into his van and ride to the airport which
isn't close by at all and we wait in line for ten minutes while the 1 person
in front of us asks every imaginable question "what if I'm late?" "What if I
want to keep it another day?" blah blah blah. Then it's my turn. I don't
even want to now what it cost me. The taxes are over 34% plus insurance. We
went to dinner as planned but later and in the end didn't get to go to all
the places we were supposed to go. I haven't even stuck a quarter in a slot
and may not get a chance. Tomorrow is the car display and I'm not going to
do it. I need to replace the suspected parts and then drive the hell out of
it to see if it blows before I can leave town. So, everything on the trip
went fine except for what I came here to do. I hope work is more enjoyable
when / if I get home. Here is to happy times. It's 12:30am and I need to
shower and sleep.

Good night,

Dave & Kathy

Over 4400 trouble free miles and then there's today.
