[DeTomaso] Dead on the Road

Maybe it was due to my fans. I have dual SPAL fans. The temp switch in the
radiator recently went out, so they're wired to come on with the key-on.
They have relays to the battery. Maybe there's enough juice flowing from
the alternator to the fans to heat up the insulation.

It wasn't smoking or anything. I didn't see any black insulation. I could
smell it though.

Will.

Will,

The big wire feeds the starter motor circuit.

The small wire does two things:

1) It provides power to all the car systems via the ammeter to start the
car
and operate all the systems when the alternator voltage is lower than the
battery voltage.
2) It supplies charging current via the ammeter to the battery when the
alternator voltage is higher than the battery.

An interesting (weird?) situation is that with only a few strands of wire
connected, you can start the car, and with enough RPM the alternator will
operate all the systems and everything will seem normal. If the RPM drop
and the
battery tries to supply the systems, those few strands will get hot and
smelly
in a hurry.
