Will,
 
The big wire feeds the starter motor circuit.
 
The small wire does two things:
 
1) It provides power to all the car systems via the ammeter to  start the car 
and operate all the systems when the alternator voltage is lower  than the 
battery voltage.
2) It supplies charging current via the ammeter to the battery when  the 
alternator voltage is higher than the battery.
 
An interesting (weird?) situation is that with only a few strands  of wire 
connected, you can start the car, and with enough RPM the alternator  will 
operate all the systems and everything will seem normal. If the RPM drop  and the 
battery tries to supply the systems, those few strands will get hot and  smelly 
in a hurry.
