distributors!).   I had these same symptoms in one of my Sciroccos, and the culprit 
turned out to be a bad distributor.   You could also have an ignition switch 
problem, or a bad connection between the switch harness and the main harness, or 
a bad coil, or...or a lot of things. :<(
