[DeTomaso] Stock Brakes

How do the rear calipers "self adjust" to compensate for pad wear?  If the pistons are turned in to fit new pads, and if the new pads are thinner than an original pad, does it take a while for the caliper to adjust?  Is there a chance that the self adjusting feature is broken?
