[DeTomaso] Oil pump pickup support...Nylocs in the oil pan???

For what it's worth, my experience has been that the nylocs in the pan hold
up to extreme temperature just fine.

I've got an Aviad 10pt pan (virtually identical to the Armando's pan), which
has nyloc nuts on both the oil pick-up support and the windage tray. I've
had this engine at the track probably 20 times over the last 7 years and
thrashed it unmercifully every time out. I don't have an oil cooler to drop
the oil temp and almost all of the track time has been in Texas heat. I
also don't have an oil temp gauge (ignorance is probably bliss in this case)
but others without oil coolers have often seen 300F at the track. Whatever
the exact temperature, the engine oil gets VERY, VERY hot.

I've also had the pan off a couple of times over that 7 year span, most
recently last year to check and change out the rod and main bearings. The
nylocs in the pan were removed, inspected, and to my eye in perfect
condition both times. The same nylocs are still in the pan today.

While I can understand the concern over engine damage due to the nylocs
disintegrating, as long as they are quality pieces I don't thing there's
much to worry about. Though as always, YMMV.

Another item not mentioned on this thread is the support for the oil pump
pickup. It is held on with the same nylocs nuts as the windage tray. I
think that is even more important to safety wire because Armando mentioned
to me (when I was at his shop) that the pipe threat that screws into the oil
pump is the weak link for the pickup and he has seen them break at the
threads before and you lose the pump pickup...that is why he added the
support. But if that nylocs backs off for any reason, you have potentially a
much worse problem if the pickup breaks off. So needless to say I am also
safety wiring my pickup support nut.

Best regards,

<<Lock-wire the oil pan...don't forget the valve covers >>

Hanging out in the pits at Watkins Glen during the 6 hr endurance races,
1975 or so, they had everything run with safety wire. Yes MD even the
valve
  covers.
