Dear Chris,

I hate it when you insist on interjecting reality and facts
into an opinionated discussion! Well done, sir.

                         Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Guys:

Been watching the nylock debate for some time, so decided to do some
research.

Nylocks are designed to be used in vibration control applications (Larry,
NO). Where the fastener will be subjected to vibration. As for heat, they
are not designed for high heat environments. This is classified as hotter
than 400°F. I suspect that your oil pan environment is not going to exceed
these standards. However, as somone told us, header bolts are certainly
going to exceed that standard!

As an optional replacement for nylocks, deformed thread nuts can work. And
there's lots more combinations that can do this job. The advantage of
nylocks is that they're a "one piece" solution. You don't need a combination
of parts to secure the fastener. And that's why (among other reasons)
manufacturers, and suppliers often use them. Also, with nylocks, or any
other deformed thread fastener, they won't spin off the fastener once the
initial torque is relieved (loosened).

So, while nylocks can "melt", they won't do it in an oil pan environment.
That nylon is tough! And if they do melt in the oil pan, you've got a lot
more things to worry about than some messed up lock nuts....

And finally, when you do use nylocks, make sure that they're coming from a
reputable supplier. A "bargain" nylock is not our friend. Actually a bargain
fastener of any kind is "not our friend". Also "economy" in fasteners is
"not our friend".

Chris
