Economy-sprint-car trick. The flex plate only acts as a mount for the ring
gear so one can start the car with a stock starter. Dual-disc clutches are
usually smaller diameter (maybe 7" in place of 11") and have their own steel-plate
friction surfaces to work against. Only other option is to remount the starter
in an inboard position, often coming in from the back alongside the trans
case & using a reverse-wound starter motor. Dunno if thats even possible with a
ZF but in any case you'd wind up chopping up a ZF & rewelding it to find out.
If you did, then the whole powertrain could be lowered 4" for a lower CG, which
is the main reason racers run small dd clutches. DD clutches are usually
abrupt-acting because the discs don't have sprung centers and because you now have
twice as many friction surfaces to disengage with the same clutch-pedal
travel- which in an avg Pantera was inadequate with one disc surface (stock). Good
to hear they got it working. Cheers- J DeRyke
