radiator place says they can't make or get a new core for stock radiator
I know brass and copper radiators are going the way of the dodo bird, but I thought a radiator core could be made any shape or size that was needed. My radiator was recored in the early 1980's and did fine re cooling, but finally developed a leak in the core. I took it to what used to be a great radiator shop that has since become mainly a general car repair place and they said they can't fix it. Anyone have their stock radiator recored lately? I know a lot of people go with aluminum rads, but I'd rather keep the stock "frame" for appearances sake Jim Oddie (was bumped from the list recently because of too many bounces, so I hope this goes thru) I know brass and copper radiators are going the way of the dodo bird, but I thought a radiator core could be made any shape or size that was needed. Not trying to hijack the thread. I have an OEM radiator I will give to anyone who wants it. It had a small leak, when I pulled it out of the car. It has been in a box for years. You can have it, just pay the UPS cost. 4 months ago I brought my radiator to a local shop. They kept the two tanks on both ends and installed a brand new core. It wasn't cheap - not all that less than a new radiator - but it was local, no shipping fees, etc. On Wed, Aug 24, 2016 at 6:04 AM, Pantdino via DeTomaso < detomaso@server.detomasolist.com> wrote:

I have been “radiator shopping” and have had a lot of good tips from The List. I am grateful for that and am leaning to the copper/brass units for repairability and longevity. Aside from the extra weight, of which I don’t care too much about, It seems the aluminum radiators get cracks at the welds and leak - not all, since I currently have one w/o leaks. The Hall Radiator seems very popular but I wanted a shroud to “focus” the air. So here is where I need more info: feelings about shrouds. A good friend that does a lot of off-road racing absolutely swears by shrouds and I don’t think the Hall unit is shrouded. If people agree about the importance of a shroud, and Hall radiators don’t come with them, I guess I need to find someone that can build a shroud for it and incorporate the fans. I THINK - open ears here. I have also contacted The Brassworks as per another List email. They told me they built one for a Pantera owner and gave me his name, and I posted it here on The List, but no response so far. Always interested - jack #4348

Jack - the radiators I've seen are unrelated to shrouds - the shrouds are built around the fans, and could be installed on any flavor of radiator. On my former car, I bought a set of Flex-a-lite sucker fans that had shrouds built in, installed it, and never had a problem again sitting in traffic. I had overheating problems when standing still before, due to tired fans. On my current car I have pusher fans, no shroud, and no temperature problems in traffic either -----Original Message----- From: Jack Donahue [mailto:demongusta@gmail.com] Sent: miércoles, 24 de agosto de 2016 20:53 To: Charles McCall Cc: detomaso@server.detomasolist.com Subject: Re: [DeTomaso] radiator place says they can't make or get a new core for stock radiator I have been “radiator shopping” and have had a lot of good tips from The List. I thought someone was using a shrouded Flex-O-Lite fan, maybe like this one: https://www.flex-a-lite.com/electric-fans/12-volt-electric-fans/compact-reve... Jack, The stock radiator is shrouded on the sides and top by external pieces that your car should have. The Hall radiator is a drop-in replacement for the stock radiator. So if you don't have the side and top pieces, the problem is with your car, not your radiator. Do you have them now? Jack, I suspect that off-road racers must encounter places where speed is limited, so maybe that corresponds to street driving? At some speed it seems like the shrouds covering the radiator would partially block air flow and would decrease air flow through the radiator, but maybe those speeds are rare? The shrouds Mike mentioned force the air to go through the radiator and would increase air flow through the radiator at higher speeds. Ken

Jack, Uh...that's confusing. Mariah fans are long, pusher fans only. If you have suckers they are something else. You should have an abbreviated top shroud but the stock side shrouds won't fit with a lay down configuration. Some sucker fan setups mount the fans in a shroud that covers the whole back side of the radiator, others don't. The former is perhaps more effective at very low speeds and less effective at high speeds, eventually becoming detrimental at extremely high speeds. Is your car currently 'broken'? Jack, I am confused as to whether you are taking about radiator shrouds or fan shrouds which are different things. Mt he Flex-A-Lite 410 is a shrouded fan setup that fits stock sized radiators perfectly... I've had good luck with Oakridge Radiator off Blossom Hill Road. Along with patching up a Pantera Radiator, they built a 4 row Dodge radiator using the original top tank and a "motorhome" lower tank -obviously this took a new, custom core. They had a lot of vintage stuff being worked on ... I was referred to them via a Ferrari guy. But I see on Yelp they're under new ownership so hard to know if they still do old school work. With the tanks off you can of course "kill" any leaking tubes, if the core is otherwise decent. Up to 10% of the tubes I heard somewhere. My radiator was recored in the early 1980's and did fine re cooling, but finally developed a leak in the core. I took it to what used to be a great radiator shop that has since become mainly a general car repair place and they said they can't fix it. Anyone have their stock radiator recored lately? I know a lot of people go with aluminum rads, but I'd rather keep the stock "frame" for appearances sake Jim Oddie (was bumped from the list recently because of too many bounces, so I hope this goes thru) _______________________________________________ Detomaso Email List is not managed by POCA Posted emails must not exceed 1.5 Megabytes DeTomaso mailing list DeTomaso@server.detomasolist.com http://server.detomasolist.com/mailman/listinfo/detomaso To manage your subscription (change email address, unsubscribe, etc.) use the links above.
