McLean indicated his '72 song was definitely inspired by the plane crash deaths in 1959 of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. Richardson.....but otherwise he has been rather ambiguous (and maybe purposely) about other meanings....including what 'American Pie' means.....however the urban legend that 'American Pie' was the name of the Holly plane that crashed is simply untrue.
