Hooking an MSD 6AL Rev Limiter to disengage the A/C Compressor
It appears engine revs killed my Sanden rotary compressor. That or it was a cheaper build. Regardless, my new motor will rev even higher and this time I am installing a high-pressure shut-off valve. In addition, I'd like to use the rev limiter feature of the 6AL to shut off the compressor so I won't kill another one. I have heard of such a mod but have not seen technically how to make it work. Anybody know what MSD parts are needed and how to hook it up to the A/C? What level of revs killed your compressor? Wondering what a safe máximum would be... anyone know? On Thu, Jun 9, 2016 at 3:19 PM, Rob Dumoulin <rob@dumoulins.net> wrote:

I rev my current motor to 5,500. My new 4 bolt will rev higher but I do not have the specs yet. I currently do not have a rev limiter in use on the 6AL and am hoping I can set the limiter to only cause the A/C compressor to disengage at 5K while allowing me to keep revving the ignition. That is the hope anyways. I live in Florida where the A/C is used year round. I am bound to forget to turn if off every time I want to have fun. Hey Rob A 6AL only limits the coil drive output. A 6AL-2 or a 6AL plus has a Retard Step output "Retard Step. This retard is activated when 12 volts are applied and rpm is above the Step1 Rpm value." It's meant to keep those 14:1 motors from blowing the teeth off the ring-gear, but just program it to go true at 4000 and do your thing with a relay. dave On 6/9/2016 6:19 AM, Rob Dumoulin wrote:

I would like to add both safeguards. Revs could be independent of high pressures. I could be ripping it up to 6500 RPM in second gear and not hit the pressure limit or could be traveling 130 MPH in 5th at 4K RPM down my driveway with no airflow and hit the pressure limit Rob DuMoulin 904.476.8744 rob@dumoulins.net www.kbsi.co http://www.linkedin.com/pub/rob-dumoulin/0/1b6/58 On Thu, Jun 9, 2016 at 3:37 PM, Larry Weston <lplugw@hotmail.com> wrote:

Hey Rob
A 6AL only limits the coil drive output.
A 6AL-2 or a 6AL plus has a Retard Step output "Retard Step. This retard is activated when 12 volts are applied and rpm is above the Step1 Rpm value."
It's meant to keep those 14:1 motors from blowing the teeth off the ring-gear, but just program it to go true at 4000 and do your thing with a relay.

No, no, no - I had my head up my butt. The MSD 8950 is the right part. That line on the MSD6AL-2 is an input. It has the use I was talking about, but you connect it in parallel to the starter solenoid input to back out the advance while cranking. Larry - it just took me a while to notice the extra weight on my shoulders. Dave On 6/9/2016 2:00 PM, Dave wrote:
