This piece (I have for show when I talk) is Kapton with 20 layers of dacron netting between silver Kapton-fiberglass fabric layers. This cuts down on heat transfer between layers. Since this is only for show, mine is not gold, but most are. The amount of gold used on an entire spacecraft can be measured in ounces. Gold is a uniquely workable metal and the foil is used primarily as radiation shield. It's more about reflection and you only need a very thin amount. Once you leave the protective cocoon of the earths magnetosphere (1m miles out), the radiation is extreme. Plus gold does not corrode. It requires less care and maintenance to keep mission-ready than it's cheaper competitors, silver, copper or aluminum. Astronauts visors are polycarbonate plastic coated with a thin layer of gold. Both IR and visible light can enter our eye's retina equally well but our eyes have visible receptors but not IR ones. If you encounter intense visible light those receptors will warn you to turn away. But with intense IR you would not realize your eyes are being burned. Do you still want to go to Mars? Hmmm? I will look into it. I have a piece of shielding in my office. It has 20 layers.
But right now I am crushed building the departure sequences for Dawn. Plus we have Juno JOI this weekend. Crazy stuff happening all weekend. [11]http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/ Get back to you later...

After a short trip yesterday I noticed one of my turbos was leaking
oil. A small amount on the input (pressure) side. A quick tightening
and it was fine. I did notice a small paint bubble on the deck directly
above the turbo. There is about 2 inches clearance about the turbos but
the deck was really hot to the touch.
Question. I am looking for a product that can be applied (as a sheet or
thin blanket) to the underside of the deck above the turbo. I have some
chromed sheet metal shields that I may be able to fit to the turbos but
would like the real protection of an insulator.
Thanks in advance to the "collective",
